Cannabigerol derives from cannabigerolic acid, the acidic compound from which the plant biosynthesizes many other cannabinoids. For that reason it is often described in botanical literature as a precursor compound.
Its molecular formula is C21H32O2. Because the plant converts most cannabigerolic acid into other cannabinoids as it matures, cannabigerol is typically present in smaller proportions than cannabidiol in mature hemp.
