Delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol is the compound the United States uses to draw the legal line between hemp and other Cannabis sativa material. Hemp is defined as Cannabis sativa with not more than 0.3 percent delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol by dry weight.
Its molecular formula is C21H30O2. The number nine refers to the position of a double bond in its ring system, which is what separates it from its isomer delta-8 tetrahydrocannabinol.
A dry-weight threshold. Cannabis sativa with not more than 0.3 percent delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol by dry weight is classified as hemp.
