Kratom alkaloids: the compound class explained

Kratom alkaloids are the naturally occurring, nitrogen-containing compounds present in the leaves of Mitragyna speciosa. The tree belongs to Rubiaceae, the botanical family that also contains coffee.

The leaf contains many distinct alkaloids in varying proportions. Mitragynine is the most abundant in most leaf material. Analytical labs quantify individual alkaloids by liquid chromatography, and a certificate of analysis typically reports mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine content as a standard specification.

The pages below describe each alkaloid as a chemical and botanical entity: naming, occurrence in the leaf, and, where settled, molecular formula. They do not describe use.
